Even in my jet-lagged condition, I couldn't resist this picture of the wall across from our hotel. Although a date has not been set, Maldives expects to have its very first free, democratic election later this year. We've been asked to help prepare the young journalists -- mostly in their teens and twenties -- who will cover this historic event. The incumbent president is the longest serving ruler in Asia and opposition parties are competing fiercely to take his job.
The posters on the wall are for the Unity party. Looks like the Republicans couldn't afford posters, so they just wrote on the wall.
Update: I'm told that the rest of the Republican message reads: Join our party and be entered in a drawing to win a free car! Hmmm. Maybe the American party leaders could get an idea here.
