The first problem is that I have less time to blog. The second problem is that Bob, one of my team members, came down with a high fever and needed to rest, so I worked both TV and radio by myself while Elaine pushed on with her managment training program. It is now Friday, the Muslim equivalent of Sunday. No editorial meetings today so there's time to catch up.
We are also beginning to develop a deeper understanding of the culture. Turns out there was a lot more intrigue behind the TV interview with the imam who was attacked outside the mosque last week. The religious scholar in question is one of the regular panelists on the Islamic talk show I mentioned in an earlier post. He is the liberal member of the panel who often says things that anger the more conservative believers. Radio's reluctance to cross promote the story with radio had less to do with convergence phobia and more to do with the feeling that giving this cleric any more exposure would only encourage more trouble. As for promoting the prison story, radio did that story months ago and feels it's old news.
Because they don't perceive the TV kids as serious journalists, the more experienced radio people are aghast at any plan for radio people to appear on TV or cross promote TV stories.
My biggest priority at this point is to start improving the TV product.
