National Day is the holiday that commemorates the overthrow of the Portuguese government by the Maldivian hero Mohammed Thakurufaanu in 1578. The Portuguese were trying to convert the Muslims to Christianity by force and it is seen as one of the darkest times in the country's history. Male is all decked out in red green and white flags for the occasion.
Unfortunately, most of the events were postponed because of rainstorms in the forecast, and then cancelled again the following weekend when it rained again.
This is the one time that Heena wore the national dress on her newscast. Waseem also sported a traditional men's costume.
