Nearly everyone we meet in Male is from one of the islands and is very nostalgic for "the life" they left behind. There is usually a gathering place on the waterfront made out of palm logs. This is where people (mostly men) pass the time, discussing the news and gossip of the day.
These net chairs, called "joli" are a lot more comfortable than they look. Another way to relax and pass the time. I even tried out a tree swing.
