Island Aviation

Our Island Aviation flight to the northern Maldives regional airport, Hanimaadhoo, began with a prayer in Arabic. They print the text of the prayer on a seat card.

I also said a prayer of thanks to God for allowing me to see the beauty of the Maldives from the air. It is really true that the islands and atolls look like drops of turquoise paint dropped into the Indian Ocean.
After about an hour we landed on the island airstrip, a modern runway surrounded by lush tropical greenery. It was the last paved surface we would see on the trip. As soon as we stepped off the runway, it was like stepping back in time. This woman is sweeping the sand road with a handmade "broom" fashioned out of palm fronds.
