National Broadcast News Center

Here is the new combined assignment desk for TVM and VOM, which will be known as the "National Broadcast News Center." Radio and TV are contributing assignment editors who will gather news from the atoll bureaus and the ministries. They will generate a list of stories every day, what we like to call the "basket of news." Producers at the TV and radio stations will be able to pick stories from the basket for their programs. I took the tour with radio and TV executives. The IT people did a tremendous job of setting up story forms, calendars and other software in record time.

This is the perfect time to reform the coverage of the president's office and other government ministries. There is now one safe, secure place that can be notified of the president's schedule and other important events so that journalists may plan fair and independent coverage. Opposition parties will also have an easy way to make sure their stories are in the editorial mix. This is the perfect time to get the VIP crew out of the news room and move forward. As a wise government official told me, "Life is not a dress rehearsal." If they do not take this chance to begin covering news like a modern democracy, it may never come again.
