A monument to the victims of the 2004 tsunami. The spines represent each of the more than 80 people who died and the globes represent the islands affected.
Maldivians seem to treat this monument with a measure of disrespect. There's an eyeglass commercial where cute models are dancing around it in sunglasses. See the comment below for the possible reasons.
Just about every day we have a story about new housing for tsunami victims, but we rarely have a reporter profile their lives and show us what it is like to be homeless since Dec. 2004.

You'll be interested to know that almost all the locals call that thing Malé's phallus/penis/dildo etc. No one likes it, with good reason too. Millions of ruffiya spent on that while there are hundreds of people still living in temporary shelters. Its construction is a perfect example of how the government is image first, people later.
its another one of the maumoons showboat monument.Something in line with penis envy and his ego I guess... ,we should pay homage to people who died by taking care of their relatives who are still left in tin canned sized tents. The amount spent on this meaningless monument could have been spent on the victims. What you are going to get this year lots of foundation stones ,kissing babies attending any function thats thrown by almost anyone and squeezing every second of airtime...if anyones gonna stand in the way he might just use that monument to clear the way...IMHO.
Thanks for your thoughts. I hope to get out to the atolls while I am here to see how some of the living conditions for tsunami victims.
