The newsroom itself is undergoing renovation and is a bit chaotic at the moment. But take a closer look at this picture. This was taken about two hours before the prime newscast and the room is almost empty. Many of the challenges remaining at TVM are due to the staff shortage that has worsened in the past three months. As American TV journalists well know, TV news is not a profession for those who are unwilling to work long, difficult hours. Some left TVM due to the workload and a hard core of talented but tired people is delivering all of the newscasts by working fifteen hour days six or seven days a week. Only seven of the 20 island bureau positions are filled.
A new batch of TV journalists is training at a facility south of the capital and I will have a chance to participate in their education when they arrive in Male next week. In order to fulfill the coverage promises made to all the political parties, we can't get the new reporters on the street fast enough.
