The afternoon meeting is a chance for me to rally the troops at TVM news. The reporters need to dig deeper for stories, not just cover what is on the day's press releases. They need to make the extra effort to interview real people and not just officials. In this time of rapid constitutional change, they need to help the viewers understand how their lives are changing. Reporters need to own their stories and do standups.
Heena stepped up to the challenge right away with a piece on security guards who sleep when they are supposed to be working. She hit the streets in the middle of the night with a crew from the programming department and got interesting video. The guards, outside banks, computer stores and the State Trading Organization, snored away while the camera was inches from their faces. The story was shown on both the 8 pm news and the weekly "Maldives Afternoon" program. More on that coming up.
