A weird and oddly popular tourist attraction is the site of Hitler's former bunker, where he committed suicide as allied troops moved into Berlin. Until recently there was no marker because Germans feared the spot would become a neo-Nazi shrine. Instead, there's a steady stream of curious tourists. It is now a parking lot for an apartment house, and only about a block from the monument to the murdered Jews of Euope.
Germans constantly apologize for Nazi atrocities as part of their normal conversation. Consider this sign outside a West German subway station, listing concentration camps as "destinations we never want to visit again." The legacy of the former East Germany is more difficult to cope with, as Germans who once spied on each other continue to live side by side.
